Cover Story Our cover shows a Gollum-like creature traveling on a dodosaur, created by Steve Sherer with 3D Studio r2, a program he has been using for less than a year. In 3DA#7, we printed two Sherer images showing his unique realistic human forms, which rely on morphing for smooth animation. You can see his technique in action in the "flip book" animation printed on the top corner of this issue's lefthand pages [shown here online at left]. When asked if he is making a living with his animation work, Steve responded, "Well, this month I am." He is an industrial designer by trade, but has a number of projects now as a freelance artist. An explanation of how he gets such realistic figures and movement will have to wait for another time. Briefly, the key is working with low-resolution meshes and applying a single planar map to a model. "Everyone's used to work with meshes that look like screen doors," he says. The dodosaur skin, saddle, saddle blanket, and blanket roll are all one map, begun in charcoal. The eye and toenails were colored in 3DS.
