Cover: The cover is by Gayle Gross de Nunez. She explains: The scene was rendered in 3D Studio r4 first using a raytrace spotlight with only the wall, crate, and the character's head, hands, and cigarette present. This was to emphasize the "hands to brain" relationship in drug use, to reproduce the transparency of the empty skull in the shadow, and to have a clean shadow of the hands. I rendered again after hiding the wall, unhiding the rest of the body, and changing the head and eyes to matte objects. To remove a degree of "reality" from the rest of the body, I turned the shadow-casting attribute "off" so that only the head and hands cast shadows.
___ The character is using his brain, heart, and lungs as a footrest. These were texture, bump, and opacity decal maps, 100% self-illuminated. The two renderings were composited in Video Post, and retouched in HiRes QFX. The figure model is from Imagination Works, and the brain from Viewpoint. Other programs used were the Yost Vapor and Scatter IPAS routines (Boutique Disk #6), Photoshop 2.5, and Fractal Painter.
