Cover: The cover is by Timothy Wilson of Crestline Software Publishing. In the issue, he writes, in part: No, this is not T. Rex, and the image was not made with blobbies (metaballs), either. This is Allosaurus Fragilis, the real "Jurassic" predator (T. Rex lived in the Cretaceous). It was created in Imagine 4.0 using many of the program's most powerful features.
___
Allosaurus is the archetypal big theropod (bipedal carnivorous dinosaur) of the Mesozoic. With a body length of 7.5 meters (25 feet), a head 75 cm. long, 1.8 meter hip height, and weight of more than a ton...
___
The design of Allosaurus Fragilis was a collaborative effort done with the help of dinosaurologist, Greg Paul, an expert in the field of dinosaur restoration. Meticulous drawings of the front, top, and side view of the Allosaur were created on grid paper. These were matched up to the grid in Imagine's interface and used as a reference for locating points, defining contours, and building the mesh.
___
[The] model was essentially constructed on a point-by-point basis, with Imagine's discrete polygonal mesh editing controls, [and] was modeled seamlessly to make the skin look more realistic. Rather than using cross sections, or skinning, all of the geometry was built to follow the contours of the anatomy, for optimal shading and distribution of points... All of the textures on the dinosaur were custom made, designed after fossilized skin impressions and muscle restorations... Overall the scene contains 65,112 polygons, 88 shadow-casting light sources, 42 image maps, 89 bones (see screen shot), 178 surface subgroups, and was rendered on a Pentium 90 with 64Mb RAM.

Errata & additional info:
> page 6: We get confused by time zones, too! Our office time is two hours behind, not ahead of Eastern (NYC) time.
> page 7: The info is there, but many people asked who publishes the LightWave 3D spacecraft design videos reviewed on pages 7 and 8. The answer is Desktop Images.
