Cover Story: The cover image is by Michael Koch. He writes that it was created entirely with Kinetix 3D Studio Max r1.2, plus Adobe Photoshop for final compositing of the rendering, wireframe, and background.
___ The head was built with patches. I started with a patch at the tip of the nose and added new patches outward from there.
___ The hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes were created with the help of Peter Watje's particle-based Hair plug-in. It currently is in open alpha testing and can be downloaded from his site at www.blarg.com/~peterw/IPAS/. The textures were created completely in Photoshop. No scans were used.
___ For lighting, I used four spotlights, with two of them working as projector lights. To enhance image quality, I rendered the face at double the print resolution and sized it down in Photoshop.
___ So far, this is only a personal project, and more images of the model will be available soon on my home page.

Michael Koch is a freelance artist and physics student in Mainz, Germany. He first wrote for 3D Artist about Max expessions in issue #28. See pages 18-19 this issue for his report on Max shape animation, demonstrated with an earlier version of the model used for the cover.
___ See Editorial Space for comments about cover design.
