Organica Export

Supplement to 3D Artist issue #31, page 27 review/how-to for Organica by Gregory Denby.

Tip by Alex Kiriako, 3DA Assoc. Editor

Impulse Organica has a 65,000-face limit for exporting files to the .3DS file format. You can get around this by exporting to DXF, though file sizes can be huge. For instance Organica's 9Kb sample Cloud file results in a 17.5Mb Polyface DXF (131,000 faces) and 23Mb 3DFace DXF.
___ DXF import can be exruciatingly slow in some programs, including 3D Studio Max. So I brought the 3DFace DXF into Okino PolyTrans and converted to .3DS. Not only was the resulting file only 2.5Mb, but the mesh was automatically "chunked" to meet the .3DS format's object size limits.
___ Organica also puts a 65,000-face limit on exporting to LightWave's LWO format. And there is a 32,000-edge limit for exporting to Imagine, unless the destination is to Imagine for Windows 1.3+, which has a 4.4Gb edge limit!
___ An alternative is to output smaller files using Edit/Mesh Controls. With Cube size 5 and geometry reduction 31%, Cloud exported to .3DS at about 64,000 faces. In Max r2, I smoothed, then optimized the imported file, which brought face count to roughly 19,000. Most of the detail was intact and the object looked smooth.
