Article excerpt: "When producing a cartoon-style 3D animation, the stylization includes lighting. I usually disregard any real-world concerns when it comes to illumination. In most cases, you want the character to pop out in the frame. I often have separate lighting rigs for characters in a scene so that I can control how each is lit on an individual basis. Nothing beats the old-fashioned three-point light setup when it comes to adding beauty to a shot. Although it depends on the characters environment and has to be adjusted to fit the scene, I usually start with a standard rig: key light, rim light, and back light [such as in Figure 7]."
