Cover Story

This is Cecilia Ziemer's fifth cover image for 3D Artist. She reports: The big creature involves more artistic license than fishing license. It is loosely based on the mesopelagic ribbon fish, Trachipterus trachypterus. Modeled and rendered in Carrara 1.1, its body and fins are combined spline and vertex models. Trach. is rather transparent and the interior body parts are reshaped duplicates of the initial body spline. It was rendered with high transparency settings for innards and fin materials, and around 40% transparency and a low glow for the main body material. The little plankton-like blobs are shown in wireframe, some blended with their transparent glowing material.--C.Z.
